The Strong Like Mum Story

Hello and thank you for visiting the StrongLikeMum hub!

I’m Shakira, and I'm a mum on a mission; to shatter the Stereotype around mother, in particular pre and postnatal health, including physical and mental wellbeing.

You see, during my first pregnancy I was told constantly of all the things I’d never do again. Apparently I’d never be active again, I’d never have time to cook and I’d always be tired, never feel body confident... etc etc However, since having my son, Rio 8 years ago (how did that happen!) and now being a mother of four ( including newborn twins)! I found motherhood to be the exact opposite. 

So I set up StrongLikeMum! Not just a portal for Postnatal Fitness but a method and a mindset that encourages women to reconnect with their confidence, creativity and passions postpartum.

In my opinion, physical wellness and mental health go hand in hand.

I’m a qualified pre and postnatal trainer, specialising in functional training for postnatal women. I’m passionate about public speaking and hosting in-person events where I can work hands on with women, helping them to achieve their exercise goals as mothers.

Part of the reason I fell in love with exercise is because of the positive impact it’s had on my mental health, particularly as a mother. Fitness became a great coping mechanism if ever I felt overwhelmed, exhausted or anxious.

It can be overwhelming for some women to know where to start with pre and postnatal exercise and what advice to believe. When it comes to postnatal health, the internet seems to be littered with outdated theories. However, by combining my professional knowledge with my personal experience as a mum, I wanted to create a space for women to get all the information they need by a qualified and credible source.

I’m Author of The StrongLikeMum Method and a regular fitness contributor on TV and Radio.

When I’m not working in fitness, I’m usually at home with my 4 children, husband and chocolate Labrador. We love exploring the English countryside and beaches or hunkering down for big family gatherings with our friends at the local pub.

I’m currently in the process of putting together the The StrongLikeMum Movement; a series of wellness plans which will cover all the main areas of pre and postnatal health; Activity, Nutrition, Sleep, Mindfulness and Hydration.
